Winter Storm Hammers Western Norway, Shuts Down Offshore Oil PlatformOSLO, Norway (AP) -- A severe storm swept western Norway on Friday, shutting down at least one offshore oil platform due to huge waves and fierce winds.
Snow clogged mountain passes, and wind and rain disrupted ferries and left some coastal communities fighting floods from extremely high sea levels.
The storm hit parts of the western coast with winds of up to 55 mph, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. It said water levels could be up to 30 inches over normal tide predictions on parts of the west coast.It said sea levels could be the highest since 1993 near Aalesund, about 250 miles northwest of Oslo.
